The name "Ulft" needs no introduction, he was ranked #1 Dressage sire in the 1999/2000 WBFSH breeding guide and he is known around the world as a top sire of both dressage and jumping horses. He has numerous approved sons and ster and keur daughters. Ulft himself ranked in the top of the performance test at his kwpn stallion grading. He was the first stallion ever to receive a 9 in dressage. After the performance test, where he finally succeeded in taking fourth place, Ulft then started his career. In 1981, when he was bred to only one mare because by the time his performance test was completed, the breeding season was nearly over. In the following years, he served some 1,730 mares, an annual average of 123 matings. Ulft has a very high breeding index for both dressage and showjumping.
As seen in this picture Ulft has an uphill build, base of the neck almost even with the point of the hip, conformationally very well balanced and strong, with good bone. He is also well known for his nice disposition and good attitude.
Ulft was born out of true Guelderland working stock, mixed with the athletic genes of famous Thoroughbreds like Man'O'War, Bahram, Roi Hérode, and - mark that magic name – Furioso which brings value to any pedigree.
Ulft's offspring is recognised for their impressive gaits, especially the trot is said to be much improved with Ulft- influence. Out of his 1730 foals, Ulft has produced numerous licensed offspring, such as Fairplay, Dublin, Boston, Conveyer, Dukaat and of course Ferro, but also fathered several international dressage horses including Argentile Gullit and 1998 European junior rider champion Habibi.
Dutch Grand Prix rider Coby van Baalen presented him in the show ring. "He was the first licensed stallion I got to ride," Van Baalen said. "Ulft was then owned by Mr van Tuyl from Gameren and he put him in training with me to be shown. At that time, there were still special classes for stallions called "bestgaand rijpaard" (best performing riding horse). It was always a battle between Ulft and Uniform."
